In its 2004 survey, the U.S. Conference of Mayors reported that families with children comprised 40 percent of the homeless population; 42 percent of those children were under age five. According to author Glynnis Walker, the destruction of the middle class began in the early 1980s, with the collaboration of the religious right and corporations, whose goals set in motion the erosion of financial security for average Americans. In 1998, Walker suffered a stroke. With mounting medical debts and unable to work, she and her daughters went from being solidly middle class to living in their car. As she struggled to pull her family back from poverty, Walker encountered the roadblocks that plague the poor and disadvantaged. She writes that though women and children are the first victims, they will not be the last. Ultimately, we will witness the destruction of everything that America represents if we allow the subversion of the American Dream.
